Product quizzes: build one and manage them

How to build a guided product quiz, choose what a shopper gets at the end, and see it in action inside a real conversation.

Written by Joseph

A product quiz asks a shopper a handful of short questions, then either recommends the right product for them or hands out a reward based on how they answered. It turns "I don't know what to buy" into a guided path to an answer, and it captures a lead along the way.

What it does

Quizzes run for shoppers right inside your chat widget. Once a quiz is live, shoppers see a Quiz entry point in the widget, and Arbyn also offers the quiz on its own when it senses someone is unsure what to buy. The shopper answers a few short questions and gets a product recommendation, or a reward, and can optionally leave their email; you see those as leads on the quiz's own row.

Where to find it

Go to Sales, Product quizzes to build and manage them. Shoppers take a live quiz directly inside the chat widget on your storefront.

Setup (step by step)

  1. Tap New quiz.

  2. Choose the reward the quiz gives shoppers. The quiz's logic tailors itself to that reward:

    • Recommend a product: the quiz matches a shopper to one of your products based on their answers.

    • Score and reward: the quiz tallies a score across the shopper's answers and unlocks a reward tier based on where they land.

    • A fixed reward alone (a discount, free shipping, a gift code, a free or discounted product, or a bundle) for every shopper who finishes, with no scoring involved.

  3. Add your questions and answers. Add as many questions as you need, reorder or duplicate them, and mark each as single-choice, multi-choice, required, or optional. Give any answer a short helper note if it needs one.

  4. Depending on the reward mode, either map what each answer recommends (which products it should point to; the most-recommended product across all the answers wins), set your score tiers (keep one tier starting at 0% so every shopper reaches some result), or configure the single fixed reward everyone gets.

  5. Choose the actual reward, picked from your live discounts and bundles, so the quiz can never promise something that doesn't exist.

  6. Decide what to collect on the result screen. Email is always collected; you can also ask for a name and phone, and set your own consent text. Whatever a shopper shares here is also reflected in your Shopify Customers list: a new customer record is created, or, if one already exists for that email, any blank name or phone field is filled in (an existing value is never overwritten). This never opts anyone into email or SMS marketing on its own; marketing consent follows exactly what your quiz's own consent text says.

  7. Watch the Go-live readiness panel on the right. It tells you exactly what's left before the quiz can go live, and updates as you build.

  8. Once it's green, tap Save and activate to turn the quiz on for shoppers, or Save draft to keep working on it privately.

How it works

Each quiz is a row on the Product quizzes page, showing its name and what its result does, how many questions it has, its result mode (Recommend, Scored, or Reward), how many leads it's captured, its completion rate, and its status (Active or Draft).

A quiz can only go live when it can genuinely give every shopper a real result. If you later edit a live quiz into a state where it no longer could, for example removing the product an answer used to recommend, Arbyn quietly turns it back to a draft and tells you why, so a quiz that's live is always one that actually works. This is deliberate: it means a quiz can never promise a reward it isn't able to deliver.

From the Actions menu on any row, you can Edit, Pause (which returns it to Draft), Activate, or Delete it. Deleting a quiz that's already captured leads tells you how many first, since they're removed along with it.

Seeing quiz activity in a conversation

When a shopper takes a quiz during a chat, you'll see it happen in that conversation's own timeline. Open the conversation in your Inbox and turn on Show events to see it interleaved with the rest of the chat, in plain language:

  • Started quiz, naming the quiz

  • Completed, with the shopper's tier, score, or matched product, and the reward they earned

  • Claimed reward, when they copy or apply what they won

The same activity also appears in the Conversion events panel on the conversation's right side, so you can trace exactly how a quiz led (or didn't lead) to a sale.

Good to know

  • A quiz can only reach Active through the same readiness check the builder shows you. There's no way to accidentally publish a broken quiz.

  • Every reward is checked against your live discounts and bundles at the moment it's shown, not just when you built the quiz, so a shopper never sees a reward that's since expired or been turned off.

  • Leads and completion rate are tracked per quiz, right on its row, so you can see at a glance how well each one is actually performing.

FAQ

Why can't I activate my quiz? The Go-live readiness panel lists the exact reasons, for example "map at least one answer to a product" or "add a reward tier." Fix what it lists and it'll clear to go-live.

Where does the reward come from? From your live discounts (Discount offers) or bundles (Bundle builder), so whatever a quiz promises is always something real and currently active, never a placeholder.

Does taking the quiz require the shopper to be in an active chat? No, a shopper can take the quiz from the widget's Quiz entry point on its own. It's only recorded on a conversation's timeline when there is one; a shopper who takes the quiz without ever opening a chat is still counted in your quiz's own completion numbers.

Can I run more than one quiz at a time? Yes, though only one is shown to a given shopper at a time; Arbyn shows the most recently updated active quiz.
