How Arbyn finds the right product, out of your whole catalog

Arbyn can search and recommend from your entire published catalog, not just your best sellers or the first page of products, and it stays current automatically as you add and edit products.

Written by Joseph

When a shopper describes what they're after, "something for the bedroom," "a fragrance for men," "do you have anything like this one," Arbyn searches your entire published catalog to find real matches, not just a sample of your best sellers or whatever happens to be on the first page. This works whether you have twenty products or several thousand, and it keeps working even while your storefront is password-protected before launch.

What it does

Arbyn understands what a shopper is describing, not just the exact words they use, and matches that against every product you have published. It never invents a product that doesn't exist in your store, and if it genuinely can't find a match, it says so rather than guessing or offering something close enough. Follow-up questions stay on track too: "tell me more about this one" refers to the product Arbyn just showed, and comparing two products keeps both in view rather than losing track of the first one.

Where to find it

There's nothing to turn on. Product search is part of how Arbyn answers in chat and email automatically. The one thing worth checking is Knowledge → Catalog → Products, which flags any products missing information Arbyn relies on to answer well, described below.

How it works

Every product you publish to your Online Store is understood by Arbyn well beyond a simple keyword match. A shopper asking for "something for the bedroom" doesn't need to type "bedding" or "pillow" for Arbyn to find the right products; it matches on meaning, so genuinely relevant products surface even when none of the words in the request appear in the product title.

This runs across your entire published catalog, not a sample. Arbyn also keeps a lightweight overview of your whole catalog (the categories, tags, and price range across everything you sell) specifically so it can answer "do you sell X at all?" honestly, even for a product that happens to be far down the list, rather than only ever knowing about the first couple dozen products it happened to have loaded.

Staying current. When you add a new product or edit an existing one in Shopify, it becomes searchable to Arbyn right away. There's also a periodic refresh that runs on a schedule as a safety net, in case anything was missed, so Arbyn's picture of your catalog never drifts far from reality even without you doing anything.

Working before launch. If your storefront is still password-protected while you're setting up, Arbyn still finds your products, because it reads your catalog through its direct connection to your Shopify store rather than needing to browse your public storefront the way a shopper would.

Never inventing a product. Arbyn only ever recommends and links to real products that genuinely exist in your catalog. It won't dress up "the closest thing we have" as the exact thing a shopper asked about, and if there's truly nothing that matches, it says so plainly instead of offering something unrelated just to have an answer.

Make Arbyn's answers better: the catalog audit

Arbyn answers better when your products carry the details it relies on. Knowledge → Catalog → Products flags any product missing a description, product type, tags, category, vendor, variant information, or sales channel publication, since these are the fields Arbyn actually uses to understand and recommend a product well. Filling these in, even briefly, meaningfully improves how well Arbyn can find and describe that product to a shopper. (Search engine title and description aren't flagged here. Shopify fills those in automatically from your product title, and Arbyn doesn't use them to answer customers.)

Use the search bar and the "With issues" filter on that page to quickly find and work through the products that need attention, rather than reviewing your whole catalog at once.

Good to know

  • Nothing to switch on. Whole-catalog search is simply how Arbyn answers; there's no setting to enable it.

  • Only published products are ever recommended. A product still in draft, or one you haven't published to your Online Store, is never shown to a shopper, no matter how well it matches what they asked for.

  • Filling in product details is the single best thing you can do to improve answers. The catalog audit tells you exactly which products would benefit most.

  • A very fresh edit can take a short moment to become searchable, though Arbyn also has a regular safety-net refresh, so nothing stays stale for long even if something is briefly missed.

FAQ

Does Arbyn only search my best sellers or featured products? No. It searches your entire published catalog, including products far down the list that a storefront's own search or category pages might not surface as prominently.

What happens if a shopper asks for something I genuinely don't carry? Arbyn says so honestly rather than showing something unrelated just to have an answer, and it never invents a product that doesn't exist in your store.

Will password-protecting my storefront before launch stop this from working? No. Arbyn reads your catalog through its own connection to your Shopify store, so it finds and recommends products correctly even while your storefront itself is still locked.

What's the fastest way to improve how well Arbyn recommends my products? Check Knowledge → Catalog → Products and fill in the details it flags as missing, description, type, tags, category, vendor, variants, or sales channel, starting with whichever products matter most to you.

Do I need to re-publish a product after editing it for Arbyn to notice? No. A product update in Shopify reaches Arbyn automatically, generally right away, with a periodic safety-net refresh in case anything was ever missed.
