Adding an AI disclosure notice to your chat widget

A persistent line under your chat's message box telling shoppers they're talking to AI, with your own wording and an optional human-fallback phone number.

Written by Joseph

Some places, and some shoppers, want it stated plainly that they're chatting with AI. Arbyn lets you add a short, permanent notice under the message box that does exactly that, in your own wording if you'd like, with an optional line pointing shoppers to a real phone number if they'd rather talk to a person.

What it does

A single line of text sits directly under your chat's message box, always visible while a shopper is typing, never something they can scroll past and lose. The notice is on by default, on every store, showing a plain built-in line unless you write your own wording. If you have a support phone number on file, the notice can also automatically add a line telling shoppers they can call it to reach a person, including your business hours if you've set them. You can turn the notice off entirely if you'd rather not show it.

Where to find it

  1. Go to Settings, Chat widget.

  2. Click Customize widget.

  3. Click the Content tab.

  4. Scroll to AI disclosure.

Setup (step by step)

  1. The notice is already on, using Arbyn's plain default line. There's nothing you need to do to turn it on.

  2. Optionally, write your own Notice text to replace the default wording, or uncheck Show the AI disclosure notice if you'd rather not show it at all.

  3. Click Save. The live preview updates as you edit.

How it works

On by default, for every store. Arbyn ships this notice turned on, including for stores that installed Arbyn before this notice existed. Several places now expect an AI assistant to say so plainly, so Arbyn defaults to disclosing it rather than leaving that to be discovered later. If you'd rather not show it, you can turn it off yourself at any time. The choice is always yours; Arbyn just doesn't leave the notice off by default anymore.

Always in the same place. The notice is anchored directly under the message box, not at the top of the chat where it would be the first thing a shopper scrolls past and forgets. It stays visible for the whole conversation, so it's never a one-time popup a shopper can miss or dismiss.

Your own wording, or a safe default. Leave Notice text blank and Arbyn shows a plain, accurate default line, translated for whichever language the shopper is using. Type your own wording and that exact text shows to every shopper, in every language, exactly as you wrote it, the same tradeoff as every other custom text field in the widget customizer.

The human-fallback line is computed from your real phone number, never something you type here. If you have a support phone number set on your store, the notice automatically appends a short line telling shoppers they can call it to reach a person. If you've also set business hours, that line includes them too, grouped into readable ranges like "Mon-Fri 9AM-5PM." This part is never merchant-editable text, it's generated directly from your actual phone number and hours so a shopper is never shown a number that doesn't reach anyone. If you don't have a phone number on file, this line simply doesn't appear, the rest of the notice still shows normally.

Never gated by your plan. The AI disclosure notice is available on every plan, it's treated as a compliance and trust feature rather than a premium one.

Good to know

  • On by default, and you can turn it off. Arbyn shows the notice out of the box, on every store, including stores that were already using Arbyn before this notice existed. Uncheck Show the AI disclosure notice if you'd rather not display it.

  • The phone and hours line is never something you write yourself. It's built automatically from your real Shopify contact details, so it can't be faked or go stale from a forgotten manual edit.

  • Custom notice text is not auto-translated. Same as other custom text fields in the widget customizer, your own wording shows exactly as typed to every shopper regardless of their language. Leave it blank if you want the notice translated automatically instead.

  • This is separate from the Terms of service and Privacy policy links in the widget's ⋯ menu. Those are legal document links; this is a short, always-visible statement that the chat uses AI.

  • The default notice also names memory, on purpose. Arbyn's built-in wording says the chat "may remember details you share so it can help you better next time", that is not filler, it is the plain-language pointer to the customer map. See The customer map, and how to remove something from it for what actually gets kept and how a shopper's own information shapes what gets recommended to them.

FAQ

Is this notice on by default? Yes, on every store. If you'd rather not show it, uncheck Show the AI disclosure notice under Settings, Chat widget, Customize widget, Content, then save.

I didn't turn this on myself. Why does my widget suddenly show it? Arbyn turned this notice on by default for every store, including stores that installed Arbyn before the notice existed, so shoppers see a plain statement that they're chatting with AI without you needing to configure anything. You're free to turn it off or reword it at any time.

Can I write my own wording for the notice? Yes. Leave it blank to use Arbyn's default (translated automatically for each shopper), or write your own, which then shows exactly as typed to every shopper.

Where does the phone number in the notice come from? Your store's own support phone number, the same one Shopify has on file. You can't type a different number into the notice itself, it's computed from your real contact details so it's always accurate.

What if I don't have a support phone number set? The notice still shows normally, it just won't include a line about calling someone. Add a phone number to your store to have that line appear automatically.

Does turning this on cost anything or require a specific plan? No, it's available on every Arbyn plan, and it's on by default rather than something you need to enable to get access to.
