How shoppers build their cart right inside chat

The Chat Bag lets shoppers add, adjust, and remove items without ever leaving the conversation, then hands off to your real Shopify checkout when they're ready to buy.

Written by Joseph

When a shopper is talking with Arbyn, they don't have to stop the conversation, go find a product page, and click "Add to cart" the normal way. They can just say what they want, in their own words, and Arbyn keeps a running bag for them right there in the chat. When they're ready, one message turns that bag into a real order at your store's own secure checkout.

What it does

While a shopper chats, they can ask for products by name, adjust quantities, remove things they've changed their mind about, and check out, all without leaving the conversation. Arbyn keeps track of everything they've asked for in a per-conversation bag (you'll sometimes hear this called the "Chat Bag") and shows it back to them as a running summary. Nothing touches your store's live shopping cart until the shopper actually chooses to check out, at which point Arbyn builds a real cart on your store and sends them straight to it.

Where to find it

No setup needed. As long as your chat widget is live on your storefront, the Chat Bag works automatically for every shopper who chats about your products.

How it works

Adding items. A shopper can name a product directly ("add the Dawn snowboard"), refer to something Arbyn just showed them ("add the first one," "the last one," "both," "all three"), or just say "add it" or "add this to my cart" while they're mid-conversation about a single item. Arbyn resolves the request against your real, live product catalog, so even a partial or casual name ("the ski wax," "the le labo one") can find the right product, as long as it's not so vague that two different products could match. If a shopper's message is genuinely ambiguous, for example naming a brand that matches two different items you've just shown them, Arbyn asks which one they mean instead of guessing. It never adds the wrong product to save a step.

When a product has options. If the item comes in more than one size, color, or style, Arbyn shows the choices and asks which one, rather than silently picking one for the shopper. If the shopper names several options at once ("add the Dawn, Powder, and Electric"), each becomes its own line in the bag with its own quantity, so nothing gets collapsed together by mistake.

Adding several at once. A shopper can ask for multiple products in a single message, and each one is added as its own line. If they specify a quantity ("add two of the snowboard," "make it three"), that quantity is applied to what they're adding or already have in the bag.

Changing their mind. Shoppers can remove an item ("take the wax out," "I don't want the Powder one anymore") or adjust a quantity ("make it two," "just one") at any point. When a product has multiple variants in the bag, Arbyn targets the specific one they mean, for example removing only the Dawn colorway while leaving the Powder one untouched. If someone asks to change something that was never in their bag to begin with, Arbyn tells them plainly that it isn't there, rather than touching the wrong item or pretending it worked.

Checking out. When a shopper says something like "I'm ready to check out," "let's do it," or "place my order," Arbyn takes everything currently in the bag and creates a real cart on your store, complete with the exact products, variants, and quantities they picked. If they'd already claimed a valid discount code earlier in the conversation, that code rides along and is verified as actually applicable before the shopper ever sees a total. The shopper is then sent to your store's own secure checkout to enter payment and finish the purchase, exactly like any other Shopify checkout. Arbyn never collects or sees payment details itself.

Different markets, correct prices. If your store sells in more than one currency or region, the cart Arbyn builds reflects the market the shopper is actually browsing from, so the price they were shown in chat is the price on their checkout. This matters more than it sounds: without it, a shopper could be quoted one currency in the conversation and handed a cart priced in another.

Good to know

  • Arbyn asks instead of guessing. Whenever a request could reasonably mean more than one product, or more than one variant of the same product, Arbyn shows the options and asks rather than picking for the shopper.

  • It's honest about stock. If something a shopper asks for is out of stock, or the specific size or color they picked has sold out, Arbyn says so plainly and doesn't add it. Nothing sits in the bag that couldn't actually be bought.

  • The real cart is only created at checkout. Right up until a shopper says they're ready to buy, the Chat Bag is just a running list inside the conversation. Your store's actual cart and inventory holds aren't touched until that moment.

  • This is a chat-only capability. Building a cart conversationally like this is unique to the chat widget. Over email, or on Instagram and Facebook Messenger once those channels are live, Arbyn shares product details and links instead, since those channels don't support an interactive bag.

  • It works in the shopper's own language. A shopper doesn't need to phrase things in English for this to work; Arbyn recognizes an add, remove, or checkout request the same way regardless of the language they're chatting in.

  • Quantities are capped per item, so a stray tap can't run away. If a shopper accidentally sends the same "add" message several times in a row, the quantity for that line stops climbing once it reaches 99, a ceiling well past anything a real shopper would order in one go. If a bag somehow already went over that ceiling before this protection existed, it corrects itself automatically the next time the bag is opened. There's no setting to change the ceiling; it's there purely to stop accidental over-adding, not to limit normal bulk orders.

FAQ

Does this replace or interfere with my theme's cart or existing "Add to cart" buttons? No. The Chat Bag is entirely separate from your storefront's normal cart until the moment a shopper checks out from within chat, at which point Arbyn creates a fresh, real cart on your store. Your theme's own cart and buttons keep working exactly as they always have.

Can a shopper add more than one product, or more than one variant of the same product, in a single message? Yes. A message like "add the Dawn, Powder, and Electric snowboards" adds three separate lines, and each can have its own quantity.

What happens if an item in the bag sells out before the shopper checks out? Arbyn checks live availability at the moment it adds something, so it won't knowingly add an out-of-stock item. If something sells out in the brief window between adding it and checking out, your store's own checkout handles that the same way it would for any other cart.

Does the shopper need an account to use the Chat Bag? No. Building a cart in chat works the same whether the shopper is signed in or browsing as a guest. They complete the purchase at your store's normal checkout either way.
