"How do I change the language" turns out to be three different questions, and they have three different answers. This article separates them, because changing the wrong one is the usual reason nothing appears to happen.
What you want to change | Where it lives |
The language of the Arbyn admin, the screens you are reading | Nowhere in Arbyn. It follows your Shopify store's language. |
The language of the chat widget's own buttons and labels | Sales, Chat widget, Customize, Content, Widget language |
The language Arbyn replies to a shopper in | Settings, Agent identity, Reply language |
Arbyn supports 21 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai.
1. The Arbyn admin: Dashboard language
Arbyn's admin screens have their own language setting, called Dashboard language. You will find it as the globe control in the top row of your Arbyn dashboard, and again on every step of the setup wizard when you first install. Its tooltip reads "Dashboard language only. Arbyn replies to customers in their own language automatically."
Pick a language there and every Arbyn screen switches to it immediately. Your choice is saved to your Arbyn account, so it follows you on your next visit.
If you never touch it, Arbyn follows your Shopify store's language. That is the starting point, not a permanent rule. So a store set to French opens Arbyn in French without you doing anything, and you can still set Dashboard language to English if you would rather work in English.
This setting changes what YOU see and nothing else. It does not change the language your shoppers are answered in, it does not change the widget's own labels, and it does not change your Shopify admin. Those are sections 2 and 3 below.
If your language is one of the 21 supported ones, the admin appears in it. If it is not, the admin falls back to English. Regional variants are handled sensibly: Brazilian Portuguese gets Brazilian Portuguese rather than European Portuguese, and a general Chinese locale lands on Simplified Chinese rather than falling through to English.
2. The chat widget's own text: Widget language
This is the language of the parts of the widget Arbyn writes rather than the parts you or your shoppers write. The welcome heading and message, the Discover and Quick actions section titles, the quick action buttons, the Perks and Quiz labels, the menu, the message box placeholder, and the various status and button labels.
You set it at Sales, Chat widget, Customize, Content, Widget language.
Automatic, the default, uses your store's own default language, the same language as your Shopify admin.
The important detail: Automatic does not follow the individual visitor's browser or device language. Every shopper who opens your widget sees the same interface language. A French visitor to an English store sees the English interface, and the buttons stay English.
That may sound like a limitation, and the next section is why it usually does not matter.
3. What Arbyn replies in: Reply language
This is the one that actually shapes the conversation, and it works differently from the other two.
You set it at Settings, Agent identity, Reply language, and it has two modes:
Match the customer's language, the default. Arbyn reads what the shopper wrote and answers in the same language. A shopper writing in Japanese gets a Japanese answer. A shopper writing in Portuguese gets Portuguese. You do not configure a list, you do not enable languages one at a time, and you do not need to know in advance which languages your shoppers speak.
A specific language. Pick one and Arbyn always replies in it, whatever the shopper wrote.
Leave it on Match the customer's language unless you have a real reason not to. It is the setting that makes a store feel international without any work, and forcing a single language means a shopper who writes to you in their own language gets answered in one they may not read.
So the widget can be in English while the conversation is in Japanese
Yes, and this is the normal case. The buttons and labels follow Widget language, and the actual replies follow Reply language. A Japanese shopper on an English store sees English buttons and has an entirely Japanese conversation.
If you want the interface in a shopper's language too, you would need a widget per language, which Arbyn does not do today. In practice the conversation is what matters, since that is where the shopper's question gets answered.
Which one do I change?
The Arbyn screens are in the wrong language. Change your Shopify store's language. There is no Arbyn setting for this.
The widget's buttons are in the wrong language. Widget language in the widget customizer's Content tab.
Arbyn answered in the wrong language. Reply language in Agent identity. If it is already on Match the customer's language, check whether the shopper's message was short or ambiguous enough that the language was genuinely hard to read from it.
I want everything in one language, always. Set your store's language, set Widget language to that language explicitly rather than Automatic, and set Reply language to it too. That is three changes, in three places, on purpose.
Your own words are never translated
Anything you type stays exactly as you typed it. That includes your welcome heading and message, your quick action titles, your discount and bundle labels, your quiz questions and answers, your trigger opening messages, your quick replies, and any custom text you have set in the widget.
Arbyn translates its own built-in text. It does not translate yours, and it does not silently rewrite copy you approved.
The same is true of the customer email templates you edit: an edited template sends exactly as you wrote it, while the shipped default is the version that carries all 21 languages. So customising one template in English means every customer receives that one in English.
Good to know
Emails follow the same Reply language setting as chat, so a shopper who emails in Italian gets an Italian reply.
The store's language is read fresh on every visit, so changing it in Shopify takes effect the next time you open Arbyn. There is nothing to clear.
Falling back to English is never silent to the shopper. An unsupported store language affects the Arbyn admin and the widget's built-in labels; it does not stop Arbyn replying in a shopper's own language, which is handled separately by Reply language.
FAQ
Where is the language setting for the Arbyn app itself? There is not one. Arbyn follows your Shopify store's language, so change it there.
Does the widget detect my visitor's browser language? No. Widget language on Automatic uses your store's language, and every visitor sees the same interface. The conversation is what adapts, through Reply language.
Do I need to turn on the languages I want to support? No. With Reply language on Match the customer's language, all 21 work with no configuration.
My store's language is not one of the 21. What happens? The Arbyn admin and the widget's built-in labels fall back to English. Replies to shoppers are unaffected and still match the language each shopper writes in.
Will Arbyn translate my welcome message? No. Your own text is sent exactly as you wrote it. Only Arbyn's own built-in labels change with the language setting.
Can I have the widget interface in French for French visitors and English for everyone else? Not today. Widget language is a single setting for the whole widget. The conversation itself will still be in French for a French shopper.
