Setting up a subscription right from chat

If your products offer subscribe-and-save plans, shoppers can start one just by telling Arbyn how often they want it delivered, no need to find the subscription selector themselves.

Written by Joseph

If any of your products offer a subscription, a "subscribe and save" plan, or a recurring delivery option, shoppers don't have to leave the conversation and go hunt for the subscription selector on the product page. They can just tell Arbyn how often they'd like it, and Arbyn sets it up using the real subscription plans you've configured in Shopify.

What it does

A shopper can ask for a product on a recurring plan in plain language, for example "subscribe me to the coffee every month" or "add the snowboard wax on a 6-month plan." Arbyn reads your store's actual, live subscription plans for that product and matches what the shopper asked for to a real one, carrying the subscription discount through to checkout exactly the way it would if the shopper had picked the plan themselves on your product page.

Where to find it

No setup needed here either. As long as a product has Shopify subscription (selling) plans configured, Arbyn can offer them in chat automatically. The plan names, cadences, and discounts all come straight from what you've already set up in Shopify.

How it works

Naming a cadence. When a shopper states how often they want something delivered, in almost any natural phrasing ("every 6 months," "monthly," "quarterly," "every other week," "twice a year"), Arbyn matches that request against the product's real, live selling plans in Shopify at the moment of the add. It never relies on a cached or previously-synced version of your plans, so if you've changed your subscription offerings recently, Arbyn is working from what's actually live right now.

When the request doesn't match anything you offer. If a shopper asks for a delivery frequency your store doesn't actually have, say "every 5 days" when you only offer monthly and 6-month plans, Arbyn doesn't quietly substitute a plan you didn't ask about, and it doesn't add the item as a one-time purchase to cover the gap. Instead, it tells the shopper that frequency isn't available and shows the real plans you do offer, so they can pick one of those instead.

When a shopper doesn't say how often. Some products can be either a one-time purchase or a subscription. If a shopper asks to add one of these without stating a cadence ("add the coffee to my bag"), Arbyn doesn't guess which they want. It shows the product with both options, one-time and subscribe, so the shopper makes that choice themselves rather than being defaulted into either one.

Subscription-only products. If a product can only be bought as a subscription, Arbyn never offers it as a one-time purchase. The choice a shopper sees always reflects what's actually possible to buy.

What happens at checkout. Once a shopper has picked a real plan, whether by naming a cadence directly or by choosing it from the card Arbyn showed them, that choice is recorded on their bag and carried all the way through to your store's checkout. The subscription that gets created there is a genuine Shopify subscription contract on the plan they picked, with your configured discount applied, not a note or a manual follow-up. Both the bag and the conversation's own timeline show exactly which plan the shopper ended up with, so there's a clear record if you ever need to check.

Good to know

  • You don't configure anything extra for this. As long as a product has subscription (selling) plans set up in Shopify the normal way, Arbyn automatically knows about them, including their cadence, name, and discount. There's nothing separate to turn on inside Arbyn.

  • Arbyn never invents or substitutes a plan. A stated cadence either matches a real plan you offer, or Arbyn says so honestly and shows the real options. It never rounds a request to "the closest one" without telling the shopper.

  • A subscribable product is never silently added as one-time. If a shopper doesn't say how often, Arbyn asks rather than assuming a one-time purchase is what they wanted.

  • This works alongside adding several products at once. A shopper naming more than one item in the same message, some subscriptions and some one-time purchases, gets each handled correctly according to what they actually asked for.

FAQ

Do I need to do anything in Arbyn to enable this? No. If your products already have Shopify subscription (selling) plans configured, whether through Shopify's own Subscriptions app or a subscription app you use, Arbyn can offer them in chat as soon as the widget is live. There's no separate setup step.

What if a shopper asks for a subscription on a product that doesn't have any subscription plans? Arbyn adds it as a normal one-time purchase and doesn't pretend a subscription option exists where you haven't set one up.

Can a shopper change their mind between one-time and subscribing while they're still chatting? Yes. As long as they haven't checked out yet, they can ask to change the item in their bag to a different plan, or to a one-time purchase, the same way they'd adjust quantity or remove something else from the bag.

Does the subscription discount show up correctly at checkout? Yes. The discount tied to the real plan the shopper picked carries through to the cart Arbyn builds for checkout, the same as it would if the shopper had selected the plan directly on your product page.
