Your chat widget can use your brand's own typeface rather than a generic system font. The font library is where those font files live: upload one here, and it becomes selectable in the widget customizer's font picker straight away. It's also the only place you can see everything you've uploaded in one list, and clear out the ones you're no longer using.
What it does
The font library is a shelf. Every custom font file you've ever uploaded for the chat widget sits on it, with its name, whether it's the one currently live on your storefront, and the date it was added. From here you can add another font, or delete ones you've moved on from.
Uploading a font here does not switch your widget to it. That's deliberate: the library is the shelf, and the widget customizer's Design tab is where you actually pick which font off the shelf goes live. So you can upload three candidates, look at each one in the customizer's live preview, and choose, without any of them touching your storefront until you decide.
Where to find it
Settings → Font library. You'll also reach the same set of fonts from the widget customizer's Design tab, where they appear at the bottom of the font dropdown under your uploaded fonts.
Setup (step by step)
Open Settings → Font library. If you haven't uploaded anything yet you'll see an empty state inviting you to add your first file.
Click Upload font and pick a file from your computer. Accepted formats are WOFF2, WOFF, TTF and OTF, up to 2 MB per file.
The font appears in the list within a second or two, marked Not live, meaning it's on the shelf but isn't the one your widget is currently using.
To actually use it, go to Settings → Chat widget → Customize widget → Design, open the font dropdown, and choose it from the uploaded fonts at the bottom. Then Save. Its status here changes to Live in widget.
To remove fonts you're done with, tick them in the list and click Delete fonts, or use the Delete action on a single row.
How it works
Your font files are stored on your own store, not on ours. When you upload here, the file goes straight into your Shopify store's own files, on Shopify's content delivery network, and the widget loads it from there. That means the font is served from the same fast, global network as the rest of your storefront assets, and it means the file remains yours: it's in your Shopify admin under Content → Files like any other asset you've uploaded.
The list shows every font Arbyn can find, not just the ones added through this page. Arbyn reads your store's Shopify files as well as its own record, so a font file that was uploaded before this page existed still shows up. If Arbyn can't reach your Shopify files at the moment you open the page, it says so in a banner and shows only what it has on record, rather than quietly presenting a short list as though it were complete.
The library holds up to 12 fonts. Once you're at 12, the upload button is disabled until you delete one. This isn't a plan limit, it's the same on every plan; it's simply a ceiling on how long the list can get before it stops being a list you can scan.
You can't delete the font that's currently live. If a font is the one your widget is actually using, its row has no delete action, its checkbox is hidden so a "select all" can never catch it, and the server refuses the deletion even if the request somehow gets through. The reason is practical: deleting a live font would leave your widget pointing at a file that no longer exists, and shoppers would see a fallback typeface with no warning to you. To remove it, first switch the widget to a different font in the customizer, then come back and delete it.
If you select several fonts at once and one of them happens to be the live one, the rest are still deleted and the live one is simply kept. A toast tells you that's what happened, so the outcome is never silently different from what you clicked.
Deleting removes the actual file, not just the name. When you delete a font here, Arbyn deletes the underlying file from your Shopify files too, so it isn't left sitting on your storage costing you space for a font nobody can select any more.
Finding a font in a long list. The list has search by font name, a status filter (live versus not live), and sorting by newest upload, oldest upload, or name A to Z. Useful once you've built up a handful of weights of the same family and want to see which one is actually in use.
Good to know
Uploading is not activating. A new font lands as Not live. Nothing on your storefront changes until you pick it in the widget customizer's Design tab and save there.
One font is live at a time. The widget uses a single custom font; the rest of the library is just available to switch to.
2 MB per file, 12 files total. A WOFF2 of a single weight is usually well under 2 MB. If your file is larger, it's often because it's a full family or an uncompressed TTF; converting to WOFF2 typically brings it down substantially.
Upload each weight you need separately. A font file is one weight and one style. If you want a regular and a bold, those are two files and two library entries.
Check your licence before uploading. A font you use on your website is being served publicly from your store; make sure your licence covers web use. Arbyn can't check this for you.
This page is about the chat widget only. It doesn't change the fonts on your storefront theme or in your emails.
FAQ
Does uploading a font here change my chat widget straight away? No. It only adds the font to your library. You still choose it in Settings → Chat widget → Customize widget → Design and save there before it appears to shoppers.
Why can't I delete one of my fonts? Because it's the one your widget is currently using. Switch the widget to another font in the customizer first, then the delete action appears here.
Where is the file actually stored? On your own store, in your Shopify files. Arbyn doesn't host it. You can see it in your Shopify admin under Content → Files.
What happens if I hit the 12-font limit? The upload button is disabled and the page tells you you're at the limit. Delete a font you're not using and you can upload again immediately.
I uploaded a font before this page existed. Is it here? It should be. This page reads your store's Shopify files as well as Arbyn's own record, so fonts that predate the page still appear in the list.
My font file is bigger than 2 MB. What can I do? Convert it to WOFF2, which is the compressed web format and usually far smaller than a TTF or OTF of the same typeface. If it's still too large, it's likely a full family in one file rather than a single weight.
